Octanol wordt voornamelijk gebruikt als grondstof voor PVC-weekmakers. Het dient ook als oplosmiddel en conserveermiddel. Octanol wordt hoofdzakelijk gebruikt voor ftalaatesters en alifatische dibasische zuuresterweekmakers zoals dioctylftalaat, dioctylazelaat en dioctylsebacaat. Het wordt gebruikt als plasticweekmaker, koudebestendige weekmaker, schuimremmer, dispergeermiddel, mineraalconcentraat en petroleumvulstof, en ook voor druk- en verfprocessen, schilderen, filmproductie, enzovoort.
